Escape Forest                                                             

Escape Forest, similar to the widely-popular “Escape Room” concept, is an interactive mystery game. Students are given a map and a mission, directing them to find clues in order to solve an enthralling mystery.

This 90-minute game requires logical thinking, creativity, and perseverance. It is great for team-building, especially for students above the age of 11.  The recommended group size is 2-7 persons. Larger groups will be divided into smaller groups. Themes vary depending on the season.

XC-skiing lesson in the ski tunnel                                          

Cross-country lessons take place in Vuokatti’s indoor ski-tunnel, the first of its kind. Built in 1997, this innovative ski tunnel offers the ideal conditions for professional athletes: fresh air and well—groomed, natural snow — all year round.

The temperature remains at -50C to -90C (230F to 160F) and the air renewal cycle is four hours. The snow machines inside the tunnel produce new snow, if needed.

The outdoor skiing season starts, traditionally, on October 10th at 10 A.M. with the opening of the “First-Snow Ski Track,” an event widely celebrated by dedicated skiers. Choose this activity for an unforgettable outing, including a customized skiing lesson and a delicious Finnish snack over a bonfire.

Snowshoe safari in the forest

Snowshoeing is a relatively easy sport that offers plenty of enjoyment and exercise. Vuokatti contains numerous trails, suitable for beginners and intermediate adventurers.

Downhill skiing class                                                                   

Conveniently located, Vuokatti Slopes are respected for offering a safe and pleasurable skiing experience. The levels of difficulty vary, providing appropriate challenges to beginners and intermediate skiers. For experienced skiers and snowboarders, there are extreme trails marked in black, including “Superpipe” and “SlopeStyle.”

Vuokatti’s professional instructors guide beginners down the slopes and share valuable tips with experienced skiers who desire to improve their skills.

Winter Adventure Day                                                              

This highly recommended program includes a dog sled ride, an ice fishing excursion, and a traditional cooking class.

Purely magical, the dog sled ride is hosted by Vuokatti’s Husky Safari and available all year round. Adults and teenagers can safely steer the sleds on their own while children find comfortable seats onboard, enjoying an unforgettable ride.  Experienced guides teach adults and teenagers the basics of driving a dog sled.

The day continues with a trip to a frozen lake where a professional guide introduce students to the joys of ice fishing. Vuokatti waters have various fishes, such as pike, perch, whitefish, trout, and grayling.

At the end of this adventure, students visit a cozy Finnish cabin where they cook fresh fish and enjoy a delicious fireside meal.

This guided hiking trip offers a memorable adventure through the breathtaking hills of Vuokatti. During the hike, students make several pitstops where they can enjoy breathtaking scenery and taste beloved Finnish snacks beside a roaring bonfire.

Berry picking and the Berry Pie Workshop     

The Berry Pie Workshop is a cooking class where students prepare and savor Finnish traditional foods, made with all-natural ingredients. Before the workshop, the group collects berries* from one of Vuokatti’s pristine forests.

The Midnight Sun Survival Course                     

The Midnight Sun Survival Course, in keeping with our philosophy of equipping students with “real skills for real situations,” offers excellent survival training for children above the age of five. During this course, students will learn how to navigate through the forest, build and start a fire, and cook in the wilderness. They will also construct a shelter and spend the night under the midnight sun. Each student will receive a survival course badge and a certificate of attendance.

Duration: 20 hours (4 P.M. to 12 P.M.)

Academic Lessons

During student camps Vuokatti Sport offers exclusive opportunities to learn about the history of our environment, the value of nature and understanding the cultural diversity. All academic lessons may be tailored into your unique program.

The academic lessons are organized in co-operation with the local schools in Vuokatti and the IB-school in Sotkamo aiming to provide a memorable school camp for students abroad. The academic lessons are taught by licensed teachers from the IB-school in Sotkamo and Vuokatti Sport. All academic lessons are designed and planned by the famous Timothy Walker, a teacher in Helsinki and the author of Lost in Finland  and Teach Like Finland (W.W. Norton, 2017) to take your learning to the next level.              


History

Finland celebrates its 100th birthday this year. How did such a young, tiny nation become a global leader in many areas, including education, information technology, and children’s well-being? This lesson reveals how Finland quickly evolved from a poor agrarian society to a wealthy industrious nation in the span of just a few decades.

Culture

Finland is famous for its quirky annual world championships, involving swamp soccer, berry picking, wife-carrying, air-guitar playing, and cell phone throwing. In this playful lesson, students investigate Finnish culture, learning about popular rituals and traditions.

Geography

Known as the world’s water richest nation and Europe’s most heavily forested country, Finland offers a stunning natural environment with an amazing history. About twelve thousand years ago, Finland was almost totally buried under a continental ice sheet, just as Greenland is today. Gradually, the ice sheet melted, and its southern margin retreated farther and farther north. During this lesson you will learn how Finland involved into a country of thousands of lakes and magical hills. This lesson is partially hosted outside.

Biology

After orienteering, students are ready for a valuable mission: Gather wild berries, mushrooms, and edible plants for a cooking lesson. While completing this fun scavenger hunt, they will learn about Finland’s incredible biodiversity.

Cooking

Beginning in seventh grade, Finnish children learn basic cooking skills at school. In this hands-on lesson, using the ingredients collected from the near-by forest, students make delicious traditional Finnish dishes.

Handicrafts

Handicrafts education has a long tradition in Finnish schools. In this the students experience the joys of a typical Handicrafts classroom in Finland. As an additional bonus, they can take home their beautiful creations.

Cross-country lesson takes place at Vuokatti ski-tunnel, which is the world’s first indoor ski tunnel that was built in Vuokatti in 1997.  The aim of the ski tunnel is creating perfect conditions for the professional athlete’s trainings on the natural snow in summer time.

The Ski Tunnel is Vuokatti’s one of the craziest innovations, which gained recognition all around the world. Nowadays Vuokatti Sports Institute uses it as one of the training venues.  High-standard conditions inside the tunnel allow skiing all year round. Air and snow conditions in the ski tunnel are maintained by using the latest computer technology. The temperature is maintained at -5 – -9 degrees, but if needed, it can be dropped to -18 degrees. The air renovation cycle is 4 hours and all the tracks are groomed by machines. The snow machines inside the tunnel can make new snow, if needed.

XC-skiing lesson

Learn to cross-country ski with the pros! Our Professional coaches will tidy up your technique for a more fun experience. We offer lessons for beginners as well as training for advanced athletes. We tailor all lessons based on the groups or and individuals experience and level of talent.

To participate, you do not need previous knowledge or experience as you will learn proper cross-country skiing techniques along the way with help from real experts. We will help you master And the best the right kind of swing, kick, how to use your poles properly and maybe even a new skating style. All lessons are an easy to follow, practical, and understandable manner.

The outdoor skiing season starts traditionally on October 10th at 10 am as the First-Snow Ski Track opens. The opening of the first snow track is a significant matter for true cross-country skiers.

The opening of the track is possible due to snow being stored during the previous winter. It is spread thickly on the track and soon after the track is ready for all skiers.

Snowshoeing is a relatively easy sport that provides an enjoyable source of exercise.  We provide a unique and memorable way to capture Vuokatti’s beauty and wonder. We have numerous routs for beginners to intermediate adventurers that are willing to discover our snow-covered paradise.

Downhill ski class                                                       

Vuokatti Slopes are notable for the compact location of trails and safe skiing environment. The difficulty levels vary from beginners to experienced level skiers. For professionals and experienced skiers and snowboarders, there are extreme trails marked black, including Superpipe and SlopeStyle slopes. The group-classification of the children is primarily determined by their skiing skills and the age.

Level 1 beginner class is for skiing or snowboarding. Children will learn basic skiing or snowboarding skills such as getting to know the equipment, learn to stop and to control the speed through play and games.

Level 2 beginner class takes place at beginner tracks on the slopes. Our professional instructors will guide beginners through their first moves on the real slope and share tips on improving technique.

Vuokatti Ski School also provides special courses for adults who want to learn the basics in alpine skiing, snowboarding or telemark skiing as well as personalized training for skiers searching to improve and or to add speed for high-performance downhill skiing.

 

Curling lesson

Curling is an Olympic Sport played by teams with a strategist and caption. The game is taken place on Ice.  This course is ideal for those who have never tried the sport before, but are curious to learn the basics. This is the perfect opportunity to try it out in a pressure free environment.
The lesson starts with an ice safety meeting prior to stepping on the ice. During this lesson you will learn to deliver, sweep and learn a few fine pointers and secrets to the game.

Ice Skating lesson

Ice Skating is one of the World’s most popular winter sport. It involves any sports or recreational activity which consists of traveling on surfaces or on ice using skates such as figure skating, hockey, speed skating, you name it.

During the skating lesson you will learn basic skating skills and figure skating through games, trick tracks and with a variety of teaching tools. There is no requirement of earlier experience needed to attend the lesson. You only need a helmet and skates to learn to gracefully soar on ice.

Winter Adventure Day                                                              

We highly recommend this course as this course includes a sled dog ride, ice fishing and cooking traditional foods at a warm & cozy cabin. You will have a chance to join in the magic of sled dogs and feel the excitement build as the dogs take you on an unforgettable ride. You will also have a chance to get to know each Husky individual by the end of your trip around Nuppu’s and Nallo’s Winter Trail. This is a safe route that can be driven by adults as well as older children.

The day continues to a frozen lake where you may start by choosing the right fishing spot. The beauty of ice fishing lies in its simplicity – everyone can do it. Once you’ve chosen your fishing spot, all you need to do is to drill a hole in the ice with a core drill, oh, and of course have the fishing equipment with you! Catching the fish is largely down to luck, although experienced fishermen have an advantage as they understand how the fish behave around the year and how the wind direction plays a role in it. However, it is always good to remember that catching a fish is a bonus, not the purpose!

Most likely you are to get lucky though as Vuokatti waters have various fishes, such as pike, perch, whitefish, brown and rainbow trout, and grayling. Our professional guide will show you what ice fishing is about and the fishing can start.

By the end of the adventure we will be cooking our prey at a nice and cozy cabin by the fireside and enjoying a nice dinner!

Snow sculptures are designed and made by human with using only snow as its material! In Vuokatti we are so promoted to this that we use snow for everything, everywhere. The sculptures can be abstract or realistic and can be functional or purely decorative. This is an easy and fun activity for the students, especially when the temperatures get really cold.

Sauna is such a big part of Finnish culture it can’t be compared to anything else. Finland has a population of 5.4 million and about 2 million saunas — one for every three inhabitants. In the winter, the freezing temperatures provide interesting contrasts and supplementary activities to steaming hot saunas. Dipping in icy lakes and rolling in the snow are said to be good for blood circulation, but most do them simply for the incredible rush.

Vuokatti Sport Institute have three places with saunas: lakeside saunas, classic Finnish sauna in Vuokattihall sport complex, as well as a traditional smoke sauna on the lakeside providing you the true sauna experience.

Sauna Treatments

It is also possible to combine luxurious treatments to your sauna experience as we offer herb baths or peat treatments to go with it. The herbs and peat are gathered freshly from the surrounding Forests. Both herbs and peat have multiple health benefits to ensure your wellbeing.
