The Finnish Experience|

The Exploring Finnish culture school camps are organized in co-operation with the local schools in Vuokatti and the IB-school in Sotkamo. We aim to provide a memorable school camp for students abroad by combining classes and offering ideal programs to understanding and experiencing the Finnish culture.

Exploring Finnish education, culture, and wildlife

Vuokatti Sport has hosted school camps and tours for decades. Annually, more than a hundred Finnish school groups visit the facilities a year.

Every “The Finnish Experience” camp offers experiential academic lessons and exciting activities, providing a memorable trip for international students. Licensed teachers teach the lessons while physical education instructors and nature guides run the activities. Our official school partners, the local schools in Vuokatti and the IB-school in Sotkamo also offer children a world-known Finnish school experience according to the new curriculum and activities as well as a phenomenon based learning model.

The academic lessons are designed together with Timothy Walker, a teacher in Helsinki and the author of Teach Like Finland and Lost in Finland to take your learning to the next level.

Now is your chance to come and experience one of the highest ranked school systems in the world!

Activities for the summer

Group games

Group games, such as BallBouncer, KinBall and FunBattle, are fun and interactive. And they’re excellent at developing a sense of community.

Fun Games at Angry Birds Park

Experience the wacky, exhilarating Angry Birds adventure park. Cross bridges, crawl through tunnels, and fly across a zipline. These exhilarating courses are suitable for children and teens. The sturdy structures allow grown-ups to participate too.

*This price is only for groups of 10-30 students.

Escape Forest

Escape Forest, similar to the widely popular “Escape Room” concept, is an interactive mystery game. Students receive a map and a mission, directing them to find clues in order to solve an enthralling mystery.

This 90-minute game requires logical thinking, creativity, and perseverance. It is great for team-building, especially for students above the age of 12.  The recommended group size is 2-7 persons. Larger groups will be divided into smaller groups. Themes vary depending on the season.

XC-skiing lesson in the ski tunnel

Cross-country lessons take place in Vuokatti’s indoor ski-tunnel, the first of its kind. Built in 1997, this innovative ski tunnel offers the ideal conditions for professional athletes: fresh air and well—groomed, natural snow — all year round.

The temperature remains at -50C to -90C and the air renewal cycle is four hours. The snow machines inside the tunnel produce new snow, when necessary.

Length: 1,2 km (one round: 2,4 km)
Width: 8 m
Height difference HD: 18 m
Total climb TC: 51 m — 2,4 km
Temperature: -50C to -90C

Hiking trip through the forest

This guided hiking trip offers a memorable adventure through the breathtaking hills of Vuokatti. During the hike, students make several pitstops where they can enjoy breathtaking scenery and taste beloved Finnish snacks beside a roaring bonfire.

Husky Safari – sled dog rides

Purely magical, this experience is hosted by Vuokatti’s Husky Safari and available all year round. Adults and teenagers can safely steer the dog sleds on their own while children can find comfortable seats onboard, enjoying an unforgettable ride.  Experienced guides teach adults and teenagers the basics of driving a dog sled, before they commence on a guided summer trail. This activity includes a traditional Finnish snack.

Fishing and cooking in the wilderness

For some people, fishing is about enjoying the scenery and the serenity of wild surroundings. For others, it’s about the thrill, especially that breath-taking moment of hooking a whopper. Perhaps the greatest reward in this activity is the opportunity to cook one’s catch over a bonfire.

Vuokatti waters have various fishes, such as pike, perch, whitefish, trout, and grayling. In the winter, our professional guide introduce students to the joys of ice fishing.

Berry picking and the Berry Pie Workshop

The Berry Pie Workshop is a cooking class where students prepare and savor Finnish traditional foods, made with all-natural ingredients. Before the workshop, the group collects berries* from one of Vuokatti’s pristine forests.

*This aspect of the activity depends on the season.

The Midnight Sun Survival Course

The Midnight Sun Survival Course, in keeping with our philosophy of equipping students with “real skills for real situations,” offers excellent survival training for children above the age of five. During this course, students will learn how to navigate through the forest, build and start a fire, and cook in the wilderness. They will also construct a shelter and spend the night under the midnight sun. Each student will receive a survival course badge and a certificate of attendance.

Duration: 20 hours (4 P.M. to 12 P.M.)

Day trip to Hiidenportti National park

The guided tour takes students through the amazing canyons of Hiidenportti. Anyone interested in cultural history will be enchanted by its delightful pit stops and fascinating stories.

Adventure Park

Vuokatti’s Adventure Park is one of Finland’s largest (and most challenging) adventure parks. It offers eight different courses of varying levels of difficulty. It’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon with friends.

*The price is only for groups of 10-30 students.

Traditional Finnish sauna – Smoke sauna

In Finland, sauna is a national treasure. This Nordic country has a population of 5.5 million and about 2-million saunas — one for every three inhabitants. No trip to Finland is complete without an authentic sauna experience. Thankfully, Vuokatti Sport offers several saunas in different locations. Enjoy saunas by the lake, including the traditional smoke sauna, and in the Vuokatti Hall Sports Complex. Book a sauna shift to see why millions of Finns adore this relaxing activity.

Academic Lessons

During student camps Vuokatti Sport offers exclusive opportunities to learn about the history of our environment, the value of nature and understanding the cultural diversity. All academic lessons may be tailored into your unique program.

The academic lessons are organized in co-operation with the local schools in Vuokatti and the IB-school in Sotkamo aiming to provide a memorable school camp for students abroad. The academic lessons are taught by licensed teachers from the IB-school in Sotkamo and Vuokatti Sport. All academic lessons are designed and planned by the famous Timothy Walker, a teacher in Helsinki and the author of Lost in Finland  and Teach Like Finland (W.W. Norton, 2017) to take your learning to the next level.

History

Finland celebrates its 100th birthday this year. How did such a young, tiny nation become a global leader in many areas, including education, information technology, and children’s well-being? This lesson reveals how Finland quickly evolved from a poor agrarian society to a wealthy industrious nation in the span of just a few decades.

Culture

Finland is famous for its quirky annual world championships, involving swamp soccer, berry picking, wife-carrying, air-guitar playing, and cell phone throwing. In this playful lesson, students investigate Finnish culture, learning about popular rituals and traditions.

Geography

Known as the world’s water richest nation and Europe’s most heavily forested country, Finland offers a stunning natural environment with an amazing history. About twelve thousand years ago, Finland was almost totally buried under a continental ice sheet, just as Greenland is today. Gradually, the ice sheet melted, and its southern margin retreated farther and farther north. During this lesson you will learn how Finland involved into a country of thousands of lakes and magical hills. This lesson is partially hosted outside.

Biology

After orienteering, students are ready for a valuable mission: Gather wild berries, mushrooms, and edible plants for a cooking lesson. While completing this fun scavenger hunt, they will learn about Finland’s incredible biodiversity.

Cooking

Beginning in seventh grade, Finnish children learn basic cooking skills at school. In this hands-on lesson, using the ingredients collected from the near-by forest, students make delicious traditional Finnish dishes.

Handicrafts

Handicrafts education has a long tradition in Finnish schools. In this the students experience the joys of a typical Handicrafts classroom in Finland. As an additional bonus, they can take home their beautiful creations.
