Downhill ski class

Vuokatti Slopes are notable for the compact location of trails and safe skiing environment. The difficulty levels vary from beginners to experienced level skiers. For professionals and experienced skiers and snowboarders, there are extreme trails marked black, including Superpipe and SlopeStyle slopes. The lesson starts with an ice safety meeting prior to stepping on the ice. During this lesson you will learn to deliver, sweep and learn a few fine pointers and secrets to the game.

Winter Adventure Day

We highly recommend this course as this course includes a sled dog ride, ice fishing and cooking traditional foods at a warm & cozy cabin. You will have a chance to join in the magic of sled dogs and feel the excitement build as the dogs take you on an unforgettable ride. You will also have a chance to get to know each Husky individual by the end of your trip around Nuppu’s and Nallo’s Winter Trail. This is a safe route that can be driven by adults as well as older children.

The day continues to a frozen lake where you may start by choosing the right fishing spot. The beauty of ice fishing lies in its simplicity – everyone can do it. Once you’ve chosen your fishing spot, all you need to do is to drill a hole in the ice with a core drill, oh, and of course have the fishing equipment with you! Catching the fish is largely down to luck, although experienced fishermen have an advantage as they understand how the fish behave around the year and how the wind direction plays a role in it. However, it is always good to remember that catching a fish is a bonus, not the purpose!

Most likely you are to get lucky though as Vuokatti waters have various fishes, such as pike, perch, whitefish, brown and rainbow trout, and grayling. Our professional guide will show you what ice fishing is about and the fishing can start.

By the end of the adventure we will be cooking our prey at a nice and cozy cabin by the fireside and enjoying a nice dinner!

Snow sculpture making

Snow sculptures are designed and made by human with using only snow as its material! In Vuokatti we are so promoted to this that we use snow for everything, everywhere. The sculptures can be abstract or realistic and can be functional or purely decorative. This is an easy and fun activity for the students, especially when the temperatures get really cold.

Traditional Finnish sauna – Smoke sauna

Sauna is such a big part of Finnish culture it can’t be compared to anything else. Finland has a population of 5.4 million and about 2 million saunas — one for every three inhabitants. In the winter, the freezing temperatures provide interesting contrasts and supplementary activities to steaming hot saunas. Dipping in icy lakes and rolling in the snow are said to be good for blood circulation, but most do them simply for the incredible rush.

Vuokatti Sport Institute have three places with saunas: lakeside saunas, classic Finnish sauna in Vuokattihall sport complex, as well as a traditional smoke sauna on the lakeside providing you the true sauna experience.

Sauna Treatments

It is also possible to combine luxurious treatments to your sauna experience as we offer herb baths or peat treatments to go with it. The herbs and peat are gathered freshly from the surrounding Forests. Both herbs and peat have multiple health benefits to ensure your wellbeing.

Academic Lessons

During student camps Vuokatti Sport offers exclusive opportunities to learn about the history of our environment, the value of nature and understanding the cultural diversity. All academic lessons may be tailored into your unique program.

The academic lessons are organized in co-operation with the local schools in Vuokatti and the IB-school in Sotkamo aiming to provide a memorable school camp for students abroad. The academic lessons are taught by licensed teachers from the IB-school in Sotkamo and Vuokatti Sport. All academic lessons are designed and planned by the famous Timothy Walker, a teacher in Helsinki and the author of Lost in Finland  and Teach Like Finland (W.W. Norton, 2017) to take your learning to the next level.

Finland celebrates its 100th birthday this year. How did such a young, tiny nation become a global leader in many areas, including education, information technology, and children’s well-being? This lesson reveals how Finland quickly evolved from a poor agrarian society to a wealthy industrious nation in the span of just a few decades.

Finland is famous for its quirky annual world championships, involving swamp soccer, berry picking, wife-carrying, air-guitar playing, and cell phone throwing. In this playful lesson, students investigate Finnish culture, learning about popular rituals and traditions.

Known as the world’s water richest nation and Europe’s most heavily forested country, Finland offers a stunning natural environment with an amazing history. About twelve thousand years ago, Finland was almost totally buried under a continental ice sheet, just as Greenland is today. Gradually, the ice sheet melted, and its southern margin retreated farther and farther north. During this lesson you will learn how Finland involved into a country of thousands of lakes and magical hills. This lesson is partially hosted outside.

After orienteering, students are ready for a valuable mission: Gather wild berries, mushrooms, and edible plants for a cooking lesson. While completing this fun scavenger hunt, they will learn about Finland’s incredible biodiversity.

Beginning in seventh grade, Finnish children learn basic cooking skills at school. In this hands-on lesson, using the ingredients collected from the near-by forest, students make delicious traditional Finnish dishes.

Handicrafts education has a long tradition in Finnish schools. In this the students experience the joys of a typical Handicrafts classroom in Finland. As an additional bonus, they can take home their beautiful creations.
